U-Haul

I recently had the privilege of using U-Haul for renting a truck for a house move.  For anyone who has not done this before, you may be in for a shock.  I did not realize that the rental fee for the truck includes nothing!  I assumed that the $29.95 daily fee (17-foot truck), for a local move, at least included some amount of mileage.  It does not.  You pay the fee for every day you have the truck and you get nothing for that.  I was charged, on top of that, 79-cents per mile.  Not only that, but you don’t even get 24-hours of rental per day!  They let you have it something like 19 hours maximum.  The U-Haul I was at insisted I not go over 19 hours a day with it or I would be charged another day.  They actually tried their best to get me to keep it just 9 hours or less.  This is a blatant rip-off.  If I am paying for a “day” of rent I should get 24-hours.  If you go to one of these places make sure you ask for the maximum time period, if they ask you when you will have it back.

If you need any kind of furniture dolly or appliance dolly, that is extra of course.  Shouldn’t one of those be at least included in your rental?  I noticed, while in the store, that you can rent a basic dolly for $7 a day!  $7 a day?  And the sign made it look like a good deal.  I went over to Big Lots and bought the exact same dolly for $26.  Now I’ll have one all the time.  Anyone want to rent my dolly for $3 per day?

As well, furniture pads or blankets are extra.  They have a deal where you can rent a dolly and pads together.  Everything is extra; there are no good deals here!  I rented a $29.95 a day truck for two days.  They make it sound, in advertising, like this will cost a mere $60 plus taxes, for local moves.  The total for me, including gas was $188.  I was moving 10 miles away.  So be prepared.

The truck itself worked fine at least.  The only complaint I would have about that is there was no easy method of roping off an area of the truck in order to keep things from sliding. The trucks need hooks or something you can easily get bands or ropes around, to cordon off areas of the truck

The employees of U-Haul were exceedingly rude as well.  I have never had to deal with a bunch of young guys in such bad moods!  The store manager I had to deal with in Lower Allen, Pa. talked like a robot, would not look at you, was yelling at every employee and was very short-tempered with any customer questions.   You really have to stand your ground and be rude back to deal with people like this.  It’s a shame you have to stoop to their level to accomplish anything.
