Tax Rebate 2008

I am very confused about how this $600 (which is really $300-$600) tax rebate given by President Bush and Congress will do anything but put the country in more debt?  I highly doubt that little amount of money per person will put a dent in this struggling economy.  Many people will spend the rebate to pay down debt, and not to buy products.  I am still unclear if we will have to declare it on our 2008 taxes?  I continue to hear that we may have to.  There seems to be some confusion in that area among the populace.

I’m still confused as to the necessity of the rebate.  Is the economy even really struggling?  I am personally not seeing people cutting back on spending yet.  Doesn’t the President or his family do any shopping themselves, or at least drive by malls?  All the normal stores I go to are as crowded as ever, and some weekends seem like Christmas, due to the crowds out shopping.  I don’t see traffic lessoning at all in my area, and even seems to be increasing!

Everyone I looked at this weekend coming out of Target, Wal-Mart and Sears had shopping bags.  I saw dozens of people in a short time span driving huge SUV’s or pick-up trucks with no one else in the car but themselves.  Does this seem like people are worried about gas prices?  At times I get the impression that people are spending more than ever in some kind of carefree attitude, throwing caution to the wind.  I just don’t see this tax rebate as doing much of anything.

Imagine the expense to get this rebate out to the public.  They sent notices out, via the postal service, to inform you that you were getting one and how to get one if you don’t normally file a tax return.  Then they apparently are sending yet another bulletin out to tell you exactly when it is coming.  Finally they will mail the rebate itself.  All this is using tax payer money to pay the postal service to delivery three pieces of mail to everyone.  Much of the rebate will go back to the U.S. government.  If you spend it at your local store, some of every dollar spent ends up as profit to that store or paid out in salaries, all of which is federally taxed.  Of course if you use the rebate to buy cigarettes or gas you are instantly giving some of it back via the direct federal taxes on those products.

If you spend your rebate at almost any store, much of it will be end up in China, Japan or India where most of the products are manufactured.  But I’m told this is a good thing, because the more money they get from us they more they are willing to lend us, putting us more in debt.  It is a symbiotic relationship.  But if you spend your tax rebate on beer, gambling or escort services you can keep much of it in the USA!  So make sure you shop wisely to get every penny’s worth of this curious rebate.

I think what we have here is a ploy by the Republican party to attempt to keep a Republican administration once Chicken George’s time is up. About the only thing my “stimulous rebate” will pay for is gas to get to and from the stores I’m supposed to spend the rebate at. I love giving the Arabs my money.
