Oil Gone or Not?

I’m confused about the world’s oil supply. When I was much younger we were informed yearly how oil was becoming scarcer every year and we would eventually run out permanently, very soon. Is that still true? You never hear mention of it anymore! Now there appears to be so much oil that we will never run out, or are they just not mentioning it for some reason. Maybe they beat that story to death and now have moved onto something else. In any case, I’d like to know if we are going to run out or not! How would they even be able to tell with any accuracy how much is left? Maybe that is why they stopped talking about it, because they simply do not know.
A group known as the Peak Oil Group says we will run out in about 45 years (from 2004). That group supposedly is made up of educated scientists. The British Petroleum Statistical Review of World Energy says it will be gone in 45 years as well. Several other sources I checked also said the same. Maybe they are just copying off of each other. Supposedly US Reserves will be totally gone by 2015. I don’t read about this in the media. Shouldn’t this be front page headlines! World oil gone by 2045! My kids will still be alive. Wait a minute…I may be alive then (but very old). Why isn’t this causing mass panic, or has it and I just didn’t notice? Shouldn’t the President and other World leaders be more worried about this than wars with each other?
