Catholics and Movies

Recently I read this in an editorial appearing in the Patriot News in Harrisburg, Pa.

I’m Roman Catholic. Whenever a Catholic group or the church itself calls for the boycott of a film, I immediately become interested in the film, even when no previous interest existed. There is great truth in the adage “any publicity is good publicity.”

More importantly, the question I ask myself each time such action is taken is “what exactly are they afraid of?” As a parent, I have always tried to impress the idea of free-thinking upon my children. I want them to be exposed to as many concepts as they can digest, religious and otherwise, so the decisions they make are based on thought rather than conformity. Our world has seen enough atrocities committed by those who merely follow along.

Additionally, what better opportunity is there to express your own thoughts and reasoning than when faced with those that are in opposition? We should embrace, not shun, the chance for meaningful family conversation. Regarding The Golden Compass, my guess is it’s highly unlikely any child who sees it will recognize its religious themes, but if he does, consider yourself lucky. Not only do you have a smart child, but a “Golden” opportunity as well.

So why are some Catholics confusing other Catholics on the reasoning of certain protests?  Wouldn’t it make sense that if a person is strong in their faith they would not be affected much by passing forms of entertainment?  It seems there may be some confusion caused by ridiculous groups trying their best to make everyone conform to their way, even though their way may be questionable, and the reason they do what they do may even be lost to ancient history!
