A Morning Religion Thought

A thought occurred to me while driving to work this morning.  I think a lot on ideas, practices and happenings in different religions and within Christian denominations.  Of course religions and religious beliefs are one of the main driving forces in much of politics, wars and international trade.  I think a lot about the nature of how people worship and why, because it is so important.  Much of it is confusing, questionable or even ridiculous.

This morning my thought was, “would a god really demand going to church from worshipers, or is loving your God, without that, enough?”  Several world religions have no form of organized church worship and several do.

In my “Christian” life I have encountered many people arguing a point that you can’t prove your love to God unless you, at a minimum, show your love by going to church regularly (which is a sacrifice of sorts because you have to take the time to do it).  Is this correct?  Is going to church really necessary to prove your love?  If God is an all-knowing god, why would he need some form of group worship from the people who already worship him with their actions?  Wouldn’t it be enough to just be a good person, help others in need, love and recognize your God, pray, and obey the commandments and laws, on your own?  Why would the god demand some form of organized group behavior like going to church?  Where did that idea come from?  It is like man made up that principle based on what he believed the god would want and, more so, because people have this incessant need for social groups.  What is driving man to think he has to worship his god in a public place?  I found nothing in Christian history which indicates that an “organized worship is demanded by God or you will lose favor with God”.  I question why anyone would think so.

Was the original practice of regular church going simply a way for like-minded people to socialize, or a way to keep people under control?  What drives the need for people to feel they need some kind of sacrifice to feel good about themselves?  These are all questions for contemplation in this land of confusion.
